10-14 March 2025 – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Karbon Korea held a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Technical Training Workshop in Seoul, South Korea. The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of CCS technologies and their applications. It featured lectures at the Fraser Place Namdaemun Hotel, covering topics like carbon capture technologies, carbon tax and market, emission trading, and practical implementation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Korea-Indonesia Offshore Research Cooperation Center (KIORCC) played a key role in supporting the CCS Technical Training Workshop, serving as a vital link between Karbon Korea and the Indonesian delegation to ensure smooth communication and collaboration during the event.<\/span>\"\"Key speakers included Dr. Tae Yong Jung, Professor at the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), Yonsei University; Dr. Yong-Gun Kim, Associate Professor at GSIS, Yonsei University; Mr. Ki Suh Park, CEO of KC Cottrell; Mr. Nils H\u00f8y-Petersen, Chief Technology Officer at Karbon CCS Global Ltd.; Dr. Sung Jin Kang, Professor at Korea University; Dr. Hyung-Wook Choi, Director of the GHG Information Team at GHG Inventory and Research Center (GIR); Mr. Yongjin Park, Head of ESG Business Group at Korea Investors’ Service Pricing; Dr. Seung-Jae Moon, CEO of RCC; and Dr. Won Dong Cho, Chairman of Karbon Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participants also engaged in site visits to key facilities, including Boryeong Coal Power Plant and Seoul City Waste Power Plant, both of which feature operational CCS plants. The visit to Boryeong Coal-Fired Power Plant allowed participants to observe the carbon capture process at one of South Korea’s largest coal-fired facilities, while the visit to Seoul City Waste Power Plant showcased how municipal waste incineration is coupled with CCS technology to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the group toured the Seoul Combined-Cycle Underground Power Plant, a pioneering facility showcasing advanced underground power generation technologies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event welcomed 20 participants from Indonesia, representing various ministries and companies, including key figures such as Mr. Eddy Soeparno, Deputy Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly; Mr. Ary Sudijanto, Deputy for Climate Change and Carbon Value Governance at the Ministry of Environment; Mr. Iman Rachman, President Director of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX); Ms. Farah Heliantina, Assistant Deputy for Energy Transition Acceleration at the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs; and Ms. Marcia Tamba, Assistant Deputy for Oil and Gas Development at the same coordinating ministry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This workshop is particularly timely and beneficial for Indonesia as the country intensifies its efforts to achieve energy transition and energy security. By learning from South Korea\u2019s advanced implementation of CCS technologies, Indonesian participants gained valuable insights into how carbon capture can support their goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring a stable energy supply. The integration of CCS into Indonesia’s energy strategy is expected to play a key role in balancing environmental sustainability with the nation’s growing energy demands, ultimately contributing to Indonesia’s energy transition roadmap and commitments toward net-zero emissions. The workshop successfully combined theoretical knowledge with practical experiences, paving the way for future collaborations and advancements in carbon management that will bolster Indonesia\u2019s journey toward a greener, more secure energy future.<\/span><\/p>\n
