21 October 2025 – The Korean training ship HANNARA<\/em>, operated by Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), arrived in Jakarta on its first-ever visit to Indonesia since the vessel was commissioned in 2019. Welcoming the ship was representatives from the Embassy of the Republic Korea in Indonesia, Korean organizations and companies in Indonesia, and the Jakarta International Korean School. KIORCC joined as one of the VIP welcoming parties, representing the National Korea Maritime and Ocean University Education Technology Research Support Center in Indonesia. The visit marked a milestone in strengthening maritime education cooperation between South Korea and Indonesia.<\/p>\n

Built in 2019, HANNARA<\/em> is one of Asia\u2019s largest and most advanced training vessels. Measuring 133 meters in length with a beam of 19.4 meters, the ship serves as a \u201cfloating classroom\u201d for KMOU cadets, providing hands-on navigation and engineering training during international voyages. The ship\u2019s arrival in Jakarta forms part of KMOU\u2019s broader effort to enhance global maritime education and build international academic partnerships.<\/p>\n

During its stay in Jakarta, the HANNARA<\/em>\u2019s crew and cadets took part in several activities aimed at promoting cultural and academic exchange. Korean cadets visited two partner maritime schools in Jakarta, where both sides shared insights on maritime education systems, onboard training methods, and seafaring practices. The exchange allowed future maritime professionals from both countries to learn from each other\u2019s training experiences and strengthen ties between institutions.<\/p>\n

The visit also coincided with activities of the Asia Maritime and Fisheries Universities Forum (AMFUF), an international platform connecting maritime and fisheries universities across Asia. A key moment of the visit was the arrival of Professor Dr. Ryoo Dong-Keun, President of Korea Maritime and Ocean University and Chairperson of AMFUF 2025. Prof. Ryoo\u2019s visit underscored KMOU\u2019s commitment to fostering academic cooperation and advancing maritime science and education in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n

The HANNARA<\/em>\u2019s port call to Jakarta reflects the growing partnership between Indonesia and South Korea in maritime education and research.
