KIORCC Co-Hosts “Accelerating the Clean Energy Transition in Southeast Asia – Development of Carbon Capture, Storage, and Utilization Solutions” Inception Seminar

12 December 2024 – An inception seminar titled “Accelerating the Clean Energy Transition in Southeast Asia – Development of Carbon Capture, Storage, and Utilization Solutions” took place today in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event, organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Karbon Korea, and supported by the Republic of Korea’s e-Asia Knowledge Partnership Fund (EAKPF), was co-hosted by KIORCC.

The seminar brought together government-level policymakers, industry leaders, academia, and energy sector stakeholders to discuss the development and deployment of carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCS/CCUS) technologies in Southeast Asia. This is aimed to address the challenges and opportunities in accelerating clean energy solutions as part of the region’s energy transition efforts.

In his opening remarks, ADB Senior Energy Specialist Mr. Atsumasa Sakai emphasized the importance of innovative technologies like CCUS in achieving carbon neutrality and meeting the Paris Agreement targets, as he considered that Indonesia has a crucial role and great potential to reduce carbon emissions while fostering sustainable economic growth. Furthermore, CCUS technologies themselves are hoped to help achieve the new Indonesian government’s direction, Asta Cita, which aims to strengthen Indonesia’s national defense and security system and promote national self-reliance through self-sufficiency, one of which being the provision of energy.

The seminar featured presentations and panel discussions from notable speakers from Karbon Korea, Karbon Global, Yonsei University, Korea University, and Bandung Institute of Technology. The sessions explored various aspects of CCUS development, including policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, technological advancements, and regional cooperation. Experts underscored the critical need for public and private sector partnerships to overcome technical and financial barriers. Participants expressed their curiosity and optimism about the insights shared during the seminar, recognizing that actionable solutions are needed to achieve the two countries’ energy transition goals.

KIORCC, with focus on supporting the offshore industry between Korea, Indonesia, and the ASEAN region, is eager to continuously facilitate B2B and G2G discussions and initiatives for the development of the sector.
