3 March 2025 – The Korea-Indonesia Offshore Research Cooperation Center (KIORCC) held a strategic meeting with the Deputy Speaker of Indonesia’s People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Eddy Soeparno, at the DPR/MPR Complex in Senayan, Jakarta. The discussion centered on the innovative potential of repurposing offshore oil & gas platforms into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) receiving terminals and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) injection sites in Indonesia.
KIORCC emphasized that such a transformation could significantly contribute to Indonesia’s energy transition goals and carbon emission reduction efforts. By leveraging South Korea’s expertise in offshore engineering, carbon storage, and LNG infrastructure, KIORCC is eager to support Indonesia in unlocking energy security.
“Indonesia has a unique opportunity to repurpose its vast number of decommissioned oil and gas platforms, turning them into LNG receiving terminals and carbon storage sites. This not only maximizes existing infrastructure but also accelerates the nation’s energy security” said Cho IlHyung, Co-Director of KIORCC.
Eddy Soeparno echoed this sentiment, noting that the initiative aligns with Indonesia’s broader energy strategy. “If we can convert inactive offshore platforms into LNG receiving hubs or carbon storage facilities, we’re not only strengthening energy security but also making a significant environmental impact,” he stated.
Furthermore, KIORCC highlighted that utilizing oil and gas platforms for LNG distribution could enhance Indonesia’s energy accessibility, particularly in regions that experience challenging gas supply.
“Our expertise in technology, regulation, and investment can help bring the rig-to-LNG and rig-to-CCS concepts to reality,” added Cho Ilhyung, Co-Director of KIORCC.
As a follow-up to this high-level discussion, KIORCC and Indonesian policymakers plan to engage further with key stakeholders, including government agencies and industry leaders, to develop a roadmap for implementation.
“With a well-structured approach, Indonesia can emerge as a global leader in sustainable offshore energy solutions,” KIORCC concluded.
