Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut B. Pandjaitan welcomed the arrival of the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea Moon Seong-Hyeok to Indonesia. Minister Luhut together with Minister Moon Seong-Hyeok held a Bilateral Meeting and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (13-10-2021).
“Today, I am delighted to welcome Minister Moon Seong-Hyeok. I hope that this bilateral meeting will strengthen collaboration between Indonesia and the Republic of Korea, particularly in maritime institutions.” Luhut stated this during a bilateral meeting.
This meeting, in particular, discussed various cooperation projects between Indonesia and the Republic of Korea via the Marine Technology Cooperation Research Center (MTCRC), such as mangrove restoration, handling marine waste, climate change, and a variety of other maritime issues. “I invite Korea and Indonesia to work together to build a world that prioritizes the principle of sustainability for future generations,” Minister Luhut said.
In addition to conducting bilateral meetings, the two ministers also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to the Offshore Installation Services Industry. This MoU was also signed by the five companies involved in this cooperation, namely GasEntec and Samin MTS from Korea, as well as Elnusa, GTSI, JSK Shipping from Indonesia.
“This MoU can be the basis of cooperation between Indonesia and Korea for the dismantling of abandoned offshore platforms. Unused offshore platforms will be used for artificial coral reefs, aquaculture, marine tourism, and research centers,” Luhut said.
The four issues discussed in the MoU are the development of technologies related to the offshore installation services industry, encouraging communication and cooperation in the private sector, capacity building and human resource development, and decommissioning (facility closure and restoration of oil and gas platform environment) and the reuse of offshore factories.
“I am delighted to have a meeting and a Memorandum of Understanding today. Korea has always supported various forms of bilateral cooperation with Indonesia, particularly in maritime matters. I hope that this collaboration will allow various industries to continue to grow “Minister Moon Seong-Hyeok stated.
