The 4th IndoDecomm in Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition in Bandung Indonesia

08-09 May 2025 – The 4th Indo Decommissioning in Oil & Gas was successfully held, featuring prominent speakers from various sectors. Mr. Syaifudin, Head of Project Management Division at SKK Migas, opened the session on behalf of Mr. Taufan Marhaendrajana, Deputy of Exploitation by discussing strategies to enhance efficiency in decommissioning activities while ensuring environmental sustainability. Nik Acharya, Counsellor (Industry and Science) from the Australian Embassy, followed by presenting Australia’s experience with the decommissioning of the Northern Endeavour and its ongoing decommissioning roadmap. Chris Bettridge from Asia Pacific Petrofac shared a case study on handling leaking wells, while Herry Lesmana from Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur discussed the challenges and solutions involved in the decommissioning of the Attaka EB Platform.

The session continued with Luke Klingenberg (Airscope), who explored how reality data capture technologies can improve decommissioning efficiency. A panel discussion, featuring Khun Nontiwat Hutangkura (Chevron Thailand), Ts Anwarudin Saidu Mohamed (MOGSC), Dr. Devi Putra (Pertamina), and Prof. Dr. Omar Yaakob (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia), delved into the stages of decommissioning, from planning to execution and completion. This discussion emphasized the importance of innovation and thorough planning to reduce environmental impact and enhance the effectiveness of the decommissioning process. The seminar provided valuable insights for the energy industry to address operational and environmental challenges in decommissioning.

On the second day of The 4th Indo Decommissioning in Oil & Gas, the discussions continued to build on the key insights shared on the first day, deepening the focus on sustainability and innovative decommissioning practices. Dr. Devi Putra (Pertamina) revisited the topic of sustainable decommissioning by exploring in greater detail how repurposing decommissioned assets can significantly contribute to minimizing environmental impacts and optimizing resource usage. His presentation highlighted Pertamina’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its decommissioning processes, emphasizing real-world applications where old assets are given new life, reducing both waste and the financial burden associated with full asset removal.

Mohammad Bilal Nuraziz of the Korea-Indonesia Offshore Research Cooperation Center (KIORCC) followed with a further exploration of alternative decommissioning methods. Building upon the previous day’s insights, Mr. Bilal expanded on how KIORCC’s research on reusing decommissioned offshore assets is paving the way for repurposing these assets into critical facilities like LNG regasification terminals and CO2 storage sites for CCS (carbon capture and storage). His session offered an in-depth look at the practical applications of KIORCC’s findings and the potential these methods have for transforming offshore assets into valuable infrastructure for Indonesia’s energy future.

The second day concluded with a continued emphasis on collaboration, as the discussions revealed the importance of cross-border partnerships and innovation in ensuring a more sustainable and cost-effective approach to decommissioning. With the contributions of leaders like, Dr. Devi Putra (Pertamina) and Mr. Bilal, the seminar has significantly enhanced understanding of how the oil and gas industry can evolve towards more environmentally responsible decommissioning practices, reinforcing the potential of repurposing assets for the future of energy infrastructure.
