5 July 2023 – KIORCC visited the Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Surabaya/Politeknik Pelayaran Surabaya (Poltekpel Surabaya) to discuss capacity-building needs with Indonesian seafarers, and also tour the academy’s facilities.

Following the international decline of competent seafarer supplies, the Republic of Korea and the country’s maritime industry hope to develop international cooperation to support the continuation of their industries through the support and provision of trained seafarers. Through a recent MoU on the Cooperation in the Field of Maritime Transportation signed during the G20, the importance of developing this industry is emphasized.

Officially established in 2013, Poltekpel Surabaya operates under the Ministry of Transportation and holds seven programs in its curriculum. The academy specializes in ETO training, which is the biggest in Indonesia.  The campus facilities include ECDIS, GMDSS, Welding, ETO, and more simulators and laboratories.

KIORCC and Poltekpel Surabaya hopes to build more collaboration opportunities with Korean shipping companies for cadets in the future.
